I am lucky – I am a Hair Stylist!

This week I colored, cut and styled a Therapist, School Nurse, retired Mail Lady, Mother of a Football Legend and a successful Director of Training and Sales.  One of the many reasons I love my job is because of the people I get to meet and develop relationships with.  Each of these incredible women has enriched my life over the years and at every salon visit.  This week, I grew a little bit more as person.  All of my clients offered somthing more to me than a filled spot on my books.  I realized today, that sure, I have a gift…a gift to do great hair, be a good listener and help people feel confident when they leave the salon and enter into their real world.  I also realized today, after reflecting on my week and personal interactions that what I have learned from my clients is more than any four year degree would have to offer!  My clients become my personal and life coaches.

My Therapist offered valuable insight about some of my unsavory behaviors! How cool is that, now I have more to work on!  My School Nurse and I discussed possible medical issues based on limited information. She didn’t necessarily agree or put her stamp of approval on the diagnosis that I came up with but, nevertheless I made a medical Diagnosis today!  My retired Mail Lady and I discussed what comes after decades of working. I was able to to envision through her experience what my retirement might look like.  I better work longer and start a savings account!  My Football Legend Momma – Man! was that a fun visit!  In between placing each foil I swear we solved the worlds problems. You wouldn’t think it possible to have such deep, riveting conversations about Politics, Race and Death during a two hour appointment but it is!! It was mentally stimulating, challenging and a fascinating learning opportunity. My Director of Training and Sales is a very impressive individual! She and I chatted about the love of our careers and passion for helping people achieve success, whatever that may mean for them. My take away from her was that whatever we do in life is much more rewarding when done for reasons other than money! Of course we all like and need money but you get it – that cant be the motive if happiness is your goal!

I am lucky, each week, every day I have personal time with incredible people who teach me, open my mind and share different experiences. I am lucky, each day I get to create my art and share my expertise with them, which fills my cup and gives my life meaning. I am lucky – I am a Hair Stylist.
